Compared to old aluminum windows framed windows, vinyl significantly reduces the amount of heat loss during winter and heat gain during summer. Mold, mildew and sweating condensation – the bane of aluminum framed windows - is virtually eliminated.

Low-E Film

All replacement vinyl windows come standard with Low-E. "Low-E" is a microscopic coating of transparent metal oxide layers on the inner glass surfaces of double pane windows.  The easiest way to explain Low-Eis that it wants to reflect heat back to its source. On a hot summer day, Low-E significantly reduces heat gain from the intense rays of the afternoon sun by bouncing the heat back. During the cold winter months, Low-E works in reverse, trapping heat inside the house from escaping through the window glass. 

Not all Low-E coatings are the same, however. Some Low-E coatings are designed specifically to be more effective at reducing heat gain, like the Cardinal 366. We like to recommend Cardinal 366 to homeowners with south and west facing homes that experience a great deal of sun exposure. Cardinal 366 Low-Ecan also significantly reduce UV fading - another hazard of sun exposure. Cardinal 270 Low-E is a great all around energy saver for northwest windows.
